Larimer County Court Logistics Guide

Going to court for a divorce or custody dispute can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, the Law Offices of Shawn H. Smith is here to help you understand what to expect. Our team protects the interests of clients in Fort Collins and across Northern Colorado. We designed this guide to give you the logistical realities of the Larimer County Justice Center. Knowing these details helps you prepare in advance for your docket call.

The main courthouse is located at 201 LaPorte Avenue, Fort Collins, CO 80521. This facility serves Colorado’s 8th Judicial District. Our experienced divorce attorneys offer the support you need during these proceedings. Our family lawyer team works to uphold your parental rights and protect your marital assets. They understand the local court rules and will guide you through every hearing.

Security Realities: Arriving At The Justice Center

The Larimer County Justice Center hears cases related to the dissolution of marriage under the Colorado Revised Statutes Section 14-10-106 and custody cases under the Colorado Revised Statutes Section 14-10-124.

Lines tend to bottleneck between 7:45 AM and 9:00 AM, and right after the lunch hour. You must follow a specific process to enter the building safely:

  1. Find the public entrance at the Southwest corner
  2. Remove all metal objects from your pockets
  3. Place your personal bags on the X-ray conveyor belt and walk through the metal detector

Try to arrive 30 minutes early to clear security. Security personnel may confiscate metal drink containers such as Hydro Flasks or YETIs; bring plastic water bottles instead.

The Fort Collins Court Parking Strategy

Finding a spot near the Fort Collins divorce court takes planning ahead. There is no free public parking at the courthouse. You should drive directly to the Civic Center Parking Structure at Mason Street and LaPorte Avenue. Hunting for an open street meter downtown will likely make you late for your hearing.

The court does not validate parking. We advise paying for extra time because family law hearings often run over schedule.

Navigating The Courtroom: Pro Se Resources And Mediation

The Court Resource Center sits on the first floor of the courthouse. Self-represented litigant coordinators are there to provide paperwork packets for divorce or parenting time modifications. However, these coordinators cannot give legal advice to the public.

For contested assets or custody, the 8th Judicial District enforces mandatory domestic relations mediation. A judge will not issue a final permanent order without this step. You can complete mediation via the Office of Dispute Resolution or private mediators.
